Ruins : Are
a symbol of the city. It was finished in 1626 and was wrecked by fire in 1644. The remains
of this building are preserved and the most significant one is the bell tower to the rear
of the building that could be accessed by a spiral staircase made of stone.
unicipal Council
Built in 1583 next to
the cathedral and facing the Main Square (PLAZA MAYOR). The 1621 earthquake affected it
but it was rebuilt in 1640. Nowadays, visitors can enter the ruins and see the original
layout.
oyal Houses:
Were
built near the harbor on the seashore. It was used by the Comptroller Generals
Office, Customs and the Chancellery and also as a residence for the President, Governor
and the Magistrates. The location of this building was designed as a fortress with a
palisade to separate it from the rest of the city. Now the remains of the buildings can be
seen on a promontory from were you can see the rest of the ruins of the city and part of
the new city of Panama. |
